Name of Lesson: “Watercolor Landscapes”

Watercolor can be a difficult medium to teach to students.  Using landscapes as a subject, watercolor techniques can be a bit more forgiving.  We want our students to be encouraged and grow. This lesson will encourage the use of watercolors because it eases them into the medium.

Class Level: Art 4

Overview and Purpose: Students will create representational landscape painting in watercolor paints.

Materials:Varied sizes watercolor paper, graphite, watercolor

Objectives: The student will learn the varied techniques of watercolor painting and apply them to the completion of a watercolor landscape painting.

Delivery of info:  Students will be presented with a demonstration on watercolor painting techniques including, wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brush, and various other techniques.  Students will study the watercolor works of various artists and discuss their use of the color and space.  The students will then bring in a photo of their choosing.  )This photo needs to be one that they have the rights to, like a personal photo)  Students will use the photo to complete a watercolor landscape painting on the watercolor paper, which is cut to match the proportions of the photo.

Guided Practice:Students will work while the teacher walks around and monitors progress. Students will have 7 days to complete the assignment.
