Cityscape in Acrylic Paint

Cityscape in Acrylics Time Lapse from Live Lesson

By

The video featured on this page is a time lapse of two, hour long live lessons that aired in the member section of this site on October 10 and 17, 2012.  To see the video in real time, complete with commentary, visit the members section of this website

For this lesson, I chose to try a new surface.  The surface I chose is not a traditional surface for acrylic painting, but in my mind, it seemed to make sense.  I decided to paint on foam core.

Surprisingly, the foam core worked in a similar fashion to masonite, once it was primed- of course.  I started with a red surface to make the colors pop a bit more.  I had recently been to a gallery and saw the work of an artist that worked on red surfaces and the contrast produced by the colors put on top was incredible.  Although I ended up covering the majority of the red priming, I still think that there are areas in the painting that benefited from the preliminary red surface.

I also chose to use a composited image for this demonstration, which presented some challenges.  The whole painting was a challenge since acrylics are not my best media.  However, with challenge comes growth.
