What is Graphite?

Graphite is the material inside of most pencils.  Many times it is mistakenly called "lead".  However, this is not what the material is made of.  Graphite is pulverized, mixed with clay constituents and formed into the shaft of the pencil.  It comes in varying degrees of hardness which results in lighter or darker marks. In the tutorial that follows, I am using an "HB" and "4B" graphite pencil.  The "HB" pencil will produce lighter marks because the graphite is harder, while the "4B" pencil will produce darker marks because the graphite is softer.

In the tutorial, I am drawing a rather simple looking bird.  I chose this bird to challenge myself a bit.  There are subtle changes in value which results in delicate textural changes.  The drawing is still very much a sketch that took just a hour to complete.
