Drawing from imagination can be tricky if you aren't experienced. But if you keep a few important things in mind, you can pick up the skill and begin creating realistic drawings straight from your imagination.
In this drawing demonstration, I am drawing a tree from my imagination with colored pencil. It is important to note that I have had a lot of experience drawing trees and an even greater amount of experience working with colored pencils.
I say this because it is important to know that I have had a lot of practice drawing from resources (photos, life). When you are drawing anything from your imagination, you work from your "previous experience", recalling in your mind how you drew that subject before from photos or life.
The more experience that you have had drawing from observation, the clearer the mental recall. The result can be quite realistic, given that you have had the experience.
So, if you want to get better drawing from your imagination, spend more time drawing from observation.
One more note before the video. Remember to use all of your "tools" for drawing when drawing from imagination. Be sure to include a full range of value, create the illusion of space and texture, and keep your light source consistent.
